The Impact and Aim of First Tee in Fostering Young Golfers

In 2019 alone, First Tee’s 150 chapters organized events spanning 1,200 organizations and 10,000 school programs worldwide. With events held at 1,400 locations, these touched the lives of more than 3.6 million children.

One measure of the nonprofit’s impact is that several golf pros have emerged from First Tee chapters. These include LPGA pro Cheyenne Woods and PGA Tour pro Cameron Champ. In 2018, the latter player became the first ever First Tee alumni to achieve a PGA Tour victory, winning the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Reflecting the real aim of the organization, the former First Tee national director, when asked when the nonprofit would produce a PGA Tour champion, maintained that it was just as important that engineers, physicians, and professors emerge from the program. The impact of the organization is not simply in creating great athletes, but in emphasizing core values such as sportsmanship, honesty, respect, and perseverance.
