Unsure of new beginnings

Coming to BCIT was a big step for me. I moved away from home, off the island and on to the mainland. I had to adjust to a completely new (and much bigger) city, all while knowing not a soul. On top of my personal life changing, my school life chnged as well.

I had a pretty good idea that I wanted to pursue TV, but I also wanted to come in with an open mind. A lot of this program has consisted of radio; something I was not entirely sure about. As we learned many foundational skills in first semester, it was gearing us up for what we call “SIMS”, short for simulations. In other words, it is practice for running a mock radio station. As we did our first few rounds of SIMS, I soon and very easily realized it was not for me. I am not a very technologically advanced individual, which made working the boards hard. On top of that, there is pressure to start everything on the exact time; News on top of the hour, Sports at the end, and so on. I found my frustration growing as the radio SIMS continued on.

However, I knew that I could take these foundational skills and apply them to various platforms. For me, I would be taking these skills on camera. Running the mock station helped me get a little more comfortable with storytelling, and allowed me to gain some necessary confidence before we began TV. I’ve learnt that there’s a lot more to to simply speaking on the air or on camera then meets the eye. Breathe, body, confidence, eye contact, one-to-one communication and articulation are just a few things that you must master to make it in this crazy industry. Although I am just beginning this journey, I am excited to see where all this hard work will land me.
