Why the Death Penalty is Sometimes Justified

Many Americans think that capital punishment (the death penalty) should be completely abolished. However, I believe that it is sometimes justified depending on the severity of the crime. In fact, I believe that someone should only face the death penalty if they take away someone else’s life. For example, if someone commits treason or participates in drug-trafficking, they shouldn’t be punished by death. But, if someone commits murder, they should receive it. Many people are wrongly accused of crimes they didn’t commit and have been put to death for something they didn’t do. This leads many people in America to believe that eliminating the death penalty completely will solve that problem. I agree that it will resolve the issue of wrongfully accused crimes but it would still leave murderers with less punishment than they deserve. If someone kills another person, a life sentence is not enough of a punishment. They don’t deserve to live, even if it’s in prison, after taking an innocent person’s life. I believe that it’s just as bad as letting them walk free. They won’t be fully brought to justice if they continue to live. So, my opinion is that an individual should only face capital punishment if they commit an act of murder.
