Nr 1 Reason Couples Fight More During COVID

Now when many of us are spending more time at home (quarantined/working from home), many couples suddenly face new challenges in their relationships.

Moments of rest and alone time are limited or perhaps in some cases completely absent.

All of a sudden, we don’t get the chance to “miss our partner” and prepare a lovely dinner for them when they’re coming home from work. You are basically in each other’s faces ALL THE TIME.

And before you know it a feeling of irritability and unease slowly starts creeping up on you. Your partner hasn’t said or done anything to cause this and you can’t seem to understand why you’re suddenly feeling upset.

The reason we struggle to handle large amounts of closeness is linked to deep-rooted experiences and fears from our childhood. Fears of abandonment, intimacy, and vulnerability.

When someone is showing us affection and wants to be close for a longer time, a fight and flight response often gets activated, and we experience intense discomfort.

This can look like temporary distancing ourselves and unconsciously avoiding our partner. Sometimes it looks like quick and unexplained disappearing (ghosting).

We cannot eliminate the discomfort once it has occurred, but we CAN learn how to balance our need for closeness and rest – and prevent, or ease the reactions.
