Higher Education is a Public Good

After years of budget cuts (and increased tuition for students), the State of Kansas has begun to restore funding for higher education.

How does this news benefit the wider public?

Eckstrand advocates for an organized strike, inspired by the courage of Greta Thunberg, that would draw wider attention to the lack of support for the Humanities and public education in general.

The first comment under the article drew attention to an adjacent issue that would complicate such an effort: increased reliance on non-tenured and adjunct faculty who could face retaliation. As with all collective actions, the strength is in numbers. With wide participation, institutions would have a much more difficult time singling out individual faculty members. A changing political climate may also help to draw wider sympathy for such a cause.
