Killed By a Scarf?!?! The Freak Accident That Killed a Famous Star

You never know when your day will come

Isadora Duncan was a prolific dancer during the turn of the 19th century. She entertained and delighted people of all social classes and danced all over the world. Duncan opened up special dance schools and studios in London and Paris to spread her art which was based on ancient Greek vases. She was beautiful, elegant, and undeniably talented.

When someone possesses all of those qualities at once, it is impossible for them not to obtain stardom. And that is what Isadora Duncan did. She became a star. Her brother, Raymond Duncan, also became a star in his own right at the same time and still has a reputation as an eclectic as well as a niche following.

Unfortunately, Isadora Duncan is famous not just for her dancing but also in the odd way that she died. Duncan was killed by a scarf in an accident that probably will only happen once.

Interestingly, Isadora Duncan had been set on sailing on the RMS Lusitania in 1915 but it appears that she could not afford the ticket. It was that voyage in which the ocean liner was sent to the bottom of the ocean by a German U-boat killing hundreds. She had fortunately avoided a brush with death once earlier in her life only to be met with another freak incident years later.

After decades of dancing, Isadora Duncan was a wealthy and well-connected woman who had just turned fifty years old. On the night of September 14th, 1927, in Nice, France, Isadora Duncan got into a car with a well known French mechanic. He wanted to take her for a spin in a wild new kind of car, the Amilcar.

While getting in the car, Isadora donned a long flowing scarf. An extra long, extra flowing, scarf. It was hand painted silk and she simply couldn’t bear to not have it with her that day. Whether she wanted to wear it so it could flap in the wind or because it was a cherished gift is unknown but she insisted on wearing the scarf that night.

During the ride in the open topped car, the long scarf flew back and got caught in the car’s open spoked wheels and became entangled. The force yanked Isadora back so forcefully that she…
