Why I love Minimalist Design

Before I started this program, I had never thought about what style my design was or would be. When I started doing this program, I just found myself like to make simple and meaningful design without knowing what style I was developing into. Until one day, a talk with a classmate, she said my designs were all Minimalist style. That was the day I started to learn about this word — Minimalist.

What is Minimalist Design?

“Minimalist design can be identified by a framework that is simple in nature. Only necessary elements for functionality are included in the design.”

“Minimalism is an art form that thrives on simplicity — yet it’s anything but simple when it comes to the creative process. Through the use of symbolism, precise forms, reduced elements, and thoughtfully-chosen colors…”

This is just a book cover picture randomly showed up in my Pinterest feed. it just caught my eyes among a lot of pictures even though it has least colors and elements. I couldn’t say it is the most beautiful picture in the feed, but somehow I liked it most. That was how I came up with this post — I was thinking about why I like this book cover rather than other colorful pictures, or why I tend to be attracted by minimalist design.

The first impression of this book cover was just comfortable. The information is just so concentrated that allows you only need to focus on several points. I think that is the simplicity working here to have lots of empty space, few elements, only black and white high contrast colors, which lets our mind less confused about where we should be looking at. Maybe the comfortable feeling was just because it suits our laziness nature that preferring dealing with as less things as we can.

As it led me to focus on the few elements there, I kept thinking about what it looks like, what it is trying to express, what this book is about, etc. It looks like disdainful eyes, or maybe peeking eyes? Is 1984 the year? What is special about that year?… Well, I am still wondering now. I think that is the charm of the design, keep you thinking about it, guessing until you read the book to find the answers. I like that how the designer is evoking my curiosity and making my imagination flow by using meaningful graphics like he/she is communicating with me by asking me questions but not just telling me all. I kinda feel free when I can have my own interpretation of what the design means. Yet, I feel motivated to read the book to prove it or find the “Aha” answers. I think that is the most interesting part!

By thinking about all that, I feel the powerfulness of minimalist design. It does less but shows more. Beyond aesthetics, it focuses more on embedding meaning and making audience think, imagine or act. That is why audience feel interested when seeing minimalist design; and as a designer, we feel so satisfied when audiences are interpreting our work and make a right guess.
