Giving In

Prose poem

sullied in a story so familiar
what are we still doing here
how much more room is left
to bitter this capacity
will your flesh stretch further
push the line back to excess
we both went along with it
tearing the boundaries apart
dissolving ourselves
liquidating self-respect
dispenser blocked and overflowing
binging on rotten yesterday
takeaway and cheap champaign
vomiting on your unironed shirt
stale breath, glasses still broken
the place still a mess
the new year that stayed ugly for years
cluttered with people all doing better
you taught me how little to give away
but the lesson was learned too late
I should have given up sooner
we all should have
but what fun would that have been
your twenties are for devastation
sometimes I imagine an alternative
the first is supposed to be easy
smiles and satisfaction
-who are we kidding
romance can’t be trusted
it’s all just grooming when you’re a girl
at least without promises
it is a little harder to get undone
but the pain was still wretched
I learned to become adaptable
breaking my own along the way
revenge is not as tasty
it offers a false sense of self-worth
learned that a heart is perceptible
felt a lie still brewing
I saw it coming before we kissed
before I fell before all this
when I was living young
and giving it all away
giving in too soon
when I should have given up.
